Gairloch is a short distance from Poolewe where you will discover the world famous Inverewe Gardens, this is a National Trust for Scotland property and is open to the public. Inverewe is a popular visitor attraction and you will find the NT shop full of interesting gifts and books, the garden has a restaurant where you can get a snack or a meal. The gardens and house at Inverewe were built by Osgood Mackenzie around 1870 and is a tribute to the far sighted Scot that loved plants from all over the world. This is a must see garden and you can travel Poolewe from most of our self catering cottages in under an hour.

Inverewe Gardens

It makes for a great day out and you will find that natural environment around Loch Ewe is full of wildlife. Remember to bring binoculars with you to watch the birds and the otters. You may need to be patient to see the otters and if you drive / walk or cycle towards Cove take time to look, we have seen otters playing in this area and they are simply amazing to see.

At Inverewe there is a nature / bird watching hide that is free to use and looks over Loch Ewe, at Poolewe. This is situated down a small road from the entrance car park area of Inverewe and it is easy to miss.

Dogs on Holiday

Note from webmaster - at Inverewe car park there are notices about dogs in cars. These warning messages are a useful reminder that the inside of a car, even with windows open, can quickly reach a point where your pet can get very stressed with heat exhaustion and even die, yes dogs die every year in cars. If you are like us and adore your dogs then please remember that the Scottish weather can go from cloudy and overcast (cool/cold in the car) to very sunny in the matter of minutes. At Inverewe we have seen nearly all the seasons within a 15 minute period, so when you visit the gardens please remember this and don't leave your dogs unattended.

As you are not able to take your dogs into the Inverewe Gardens, however, they do have kennels for you to use when you visit, so just pop in and ask any of the very friendly staff and they will assist you. The Gardens have an area for walking your dog and you are very welcome to bring them with you. So better to be safe than sorry, ask the National Trust staff for assistance and then you can relax and enjoy the gardens and a meal when you visit and your dog will enjoy the rest in a nice secure kennel.
